If you want to go all Martha Stewart this holiday, try your hand at homemade Ribbon Candy. This old-fashioned Christmas candy is a "pulled candy" that uses a cooked sugar syrup as its base, and the flavoring and colors can be customized. Be warned that pulling candies can be tricky the first time, so be prepared to have some "special" ribbons on your first attempt. It'll still be much more impressive than your great-aunt's store-bought fruit cake, though!
