Anyhow, enough about my fondness for doughnuts and more about the recipe. These Doughnut Truffles are made in a similar way to most cake ball recipes, but instead of using cake as the base they use plain cake doughnuts. I always thought that plain doughnuts didn't have a very distinctive flavor, but when I tasted the truffles I was shocked at how they tasted exactly like a doughnut. It was uncanny--and awesome!
So while you can technically make these candies with regular cake, and shape them into doughnut shapes, I encourage you to use actual doughnuts, to get that fresh-from-the-doughnut-store flavor. Decorated with a topping of melted candy "glaze" and sprinkles, they're the perfect morning pick-me-up or accompaniment to a nice cup of coffee.
