Oreo Caramel Apples

One sure sign you may be a food nerd: if you get unreasonably excited about finding your favorite apples at the grocery store. Guilty as charged!

I like most apples just fine, but I love Honeycrisp apples. To me, they have the perfect texture and flavor, and I could easily eat one with every meal. I don't know if this is true everywhere, but where I live they're only available for a few months in the fall/early winter, so when I find them at the store, I pounce! I often buy way more apples than my little household actually needs, but I know that each batch of Honeycrisps could be my last, so I just can't help myself.

When we get tired of eating the apples plain, I work them into other dishes: grated into oatmeal, chopped up and added to muffins, sauteed to serve over pancakes...the list is endless. Making caramel apples is another fun--and way less healthy--way of enjoying my favorite fall treat! By using store-bought caramels, the apples are quick to make, and they can be easily customized. I have a major sweet tooth, so I like to add fun toppings like chopped-up candy bars or cookies. This recipe for Oreo Caramel Apples takes a regular caramel apple, then covers it with gorgeous swirls of white and dark chocolate and chunks of Oreo cookies. It's indulgent, and it's a sure way to lose any nutritional benefits from the apple, but it's a fun once-in-a-while treat. Give it a try the next time you have a few extra apples lying around!
